Jack's knowledge of the Vilas County Lumber Co. (VCLCo) was virtually nil prior to 1999. As a child he had been told by my mother that a distant cousin, William (Bill) S. Winegar, owned a lumber company located in Winegar, Wisconsin, that logged in the states of Wisconsin and Michigan. Cousin Bill was a seventh generation in America, Jack is a tenth generation in America. They are both descendents of Garret Winegar, second generation in America, who was born in 1702, our closest common ancestor.

About 1953 Jack wrote a letter to Winegar, Wisconsin asking for post marks for a Cub Scout project and received a sheet of them from the Post Mistress, Lucille Eschenbauch.

In the late 1990’s he was planning on building a prototypical accurate model logging railroad. He started collecting maps of the Presque Isle area and read everything he could find on Sawmills and logging.

In 1999 on his way from Chicago to Minneapolis for a national model railroad convention he stopped at the Presque Isle Historical Society, Irma Stein Memorial Library, Vilas Historical Museum and the Rhinelander Railroad and Logging Museum for information on the “Winegar” Sawmill. With this information he learned of the VCLCo and started focusing on logging practices in northern Wisconsin.

The best description he have found on a Sawmill operation similar to that of the VCLCo is Benjamin Kline, Jr’s book; Dinkies, Dams & Sawdust. The best life of a Shanty Boy is in George Corrigan’s autobiographical book; Calked Boots and Cant Hooks. He also did an industrial archeology visit to the Crowell & Spencer Lumber Co. in Longleaf, LA, where he was able to obtain visual knowledge of the operation and layout of a Sawmill of the VCLCo era. This Sawmill was also State-of-the-Art when built, as was the VCLCo. The Crowell Sawmill has changed little since being built in 1914 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
